Swedish furniture giant IKEA’s works have now begun in Exeter for its new store.

Planning permission for the IKEA development was approved in December 2016 by Exeter City Council after first submitting the documents for the new store in January 2014.

The company has now officially commenced with construction works, with the retailer stating that it expects the project to be completed and open by summer 2018.  IKEA has also begun its recruitment process with some staff already employed and training at their Bristol store.

The new store will be situated between Sandy Park and Newcourt Way. In addition, 220 new homes will be built on the adjacent land.

An IKEA spokesperson confirmed that the Exeter complex will be a ‘full IKEA store’ with car park, restaurant, and a crèche.
