Disabled facilities grants

Show all parts of this guide

2. How to apply

Your first step in being awarded a disabled facilities grant is for you to contact Care Direct at Devon County Council on 0345 1551 007 (or the Integrated Children's Service on 0330 024 5321) to arrange for an occupational therapist to visit.

The occupational therapist will assess your needs for an adaptation and if a disabled facilities grant is recommended they will provide you with a referral.

Disabled facilities grants are means tested with the exception of cases where the works are for the benefit of a child (up to 16 years old) or a young person who is under 19 years and is in full time education.

Important points to remember

  • You must NOT start any works until you have received formal approval from your local Council
  • It must be your intention to remain living in your home for the next 5 years
  • In certain circumstances, the grants may have to be paid back if the property is sold within 10 years of the works being completed
  • You may need building regulation approval and/or planning permission for some adaptations
