4. How to claim
When you apply for a qualifying benefit, you’ll be asked extra questions about your housing costs to find out if you’re eligible for Support for Mortgage Interest (SMI).
You don’t need to make a separate application for SMI.
If you’re already claiming a qualifying benefit when you buy a house or take out a loan for repairs and improvements to your home, contact the office that pays your benefit to find out if you could get SMI.

- Jobcentre Plus if you get or have applied for Income Support, income-based JSA or income-related ESA
- the Pension Service if you get or have applied for Pension Credit
- the Universal Credit helpline if you get or have applied for Universal Credit
