3. The River Exe and Estuary

River Exe

The Port of Exeter extends from Blackaller weir in the heart of the City to the safe water mark a mile or so out at sea off Exmouth beach.    Together with the lower river Clyst the port area includes the non tidal stretches of the river above Countess Weir and the historic Quay at Topsham.   Nowadays our responsibility is confined to marking a navigation channel from the sea to just above Topsham.   The Port area is subject to a maximum speed limit of 10 knots in the estuary and off shore, and 5 knots within the canal.
