7. Smoke control areas

Some parts of Exeter have been designated as smoke control areas. Within these areas, it is an offence for smoke to be released from a chimney. Any solid fuel fires or appliances used within a smoke control area should either be exempted under the Clean Air Act (ie certified as capable of burning specified fuels in a smokeless manner), or should be used to burn only authorised smokeless fuels.

Lists of exempt appliances and authorised fuels are available at UK smoke control areas.

Please use this map to see if your property is in a smoke control area (smoke control areas are marked in blue):

  • zoom and scroll to your area and click on the map
  • or type your postcode into the search box
