5. Priority sectors where there is a clear skills need

Finally, sectors where there is a clear skills need are highlighted as priorities:

Digital technology

With future economic growth driven by digitalisation there are constant skill development requirements in the digital technology sector. Exeter needs to ensure that it remains a destination where individuals want to work (see retention above). Upholding the role of technology with relevant skills in the environmental sector in Exeter will be important for the net zero agenda in the city and more widely.

Construction

The construction sector continues to need to train individuals to replace those leaving the industry and skills will need to adjust to new working practices, particularly around the net zero agenda. Exeter City Council will support the work of partners to develop retrofit skills centres and use the Building Greater Exeter partnership as a vehicle for matching jobs and skills, as well as overcoming misconceptions about the industry.

Health and social care

There is a clear need for more health and social care professionals that will require additional training and skill development. Exeter City Council will work with partners to support skill development as well as promoting career pathways and knowledge of progression routes to encourage participation in the sector.

Creative arts, culture and digital media

Though mainly outside of the skills landscape, support for the creative sector can be given by supporting the environment that the industry operates in. Identifying potential pathways in the sector and encouraging the development of leadership and management skills will help, and increasingly digital skills will be required to support activities.

Voluntary sector

Social enterprises, charities, community interest companies and voluntary organisations are all becoming increasingly important employers with support needed to overcome the perceptions and identify the opportunities available.
