Job Placement Summary:

The role is an exciting opportunity to work in a small but very busy team providing Pest Control Services.  This post provides an opportunity to get involved in areas of work that make a difference to individuals and families and have the potential to make a positive impact on neighbourhoods within the city.

You will provide a high quality customer service including communicating with customers in writing, by telephone and in person, arranging appointments, resolving customer problems and seeking customer feedback.

The main day to day responsibilities involve assisting the Pest Control Officer in investigating entry routes for pests into premises, selecting the most suitable method of controlling pests, and where appropriate, applying the chosen method.  Advise on proofing an area to prevent pest access, educate customers on the prevention of pests, liaising & working alongside other agencies.

There will be an opportunity to work across teams within the Environmental Health Service and provide support to investigation of enviro-crime and waste management issues.

At the end of this placement the successful person will have gained a Level 2 Pest Control Qualification and will have developed a range of skills.

Employability Support:

Exeter City Council will review the available options in relation to training opportunities for our placement/s. We will ensure that any programme of training will cover the skills that are needed in relation to general ‘employability’, such as; teamwork, communication, time keeping, and organisation.

In addition we will identify any specific training requirements for our placements that are linked to the job role they will be undertaking.  The placement will require the young person to complete a Level 2 Pest Control Qualification.

Each young person on placement with us will be allocated a mentor from within the business, this person will not be their line manager, but will be available to support the young person to ensure their placement is successful. This will include ensuring they know their way around the workplace, are introduced to people outside of their immediate team, and would include regular ‘how’s it going?’ type conversations.

Continual opportunity for review and reflection will be provided by colleagues and managers. Whilst there will be one manager overseeing the placement, guidance and support will be provided and monitored by the Environmental Health and Community Safety Manager. This will be through a combination of 1 to 1 discussions and group meetings with the immediate line manager, where dialogue and feedback will be encouraged.

We will support our existing staff to undertake this role by provided them with suitable training also in the form our mentoring and coaching qualifications.

Person Specification:

  • Educated to GCSE standard grade C or above in Maths, English and ICT
  • Educated to GCSE standard in Science, Biology or Chemistry
  • Good IT skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Able to climb ladders, lift drain covers and physically able to bend, stretch and squat, willing to work outside or in confined spaces.
  • Confident to deal with insects, rodents or unpleasant sights or smells.
  • Ability to follow instructions, understand policies and procedures
  • Commitment to excellent customer care
  • Pays attention to detail

Who is eligible for the Kickstart scheme?

The Kickstart scheme is specifically designed for those aged between 16 and 24, who are currently claiming Universal Credit, and may be at risk of long-term unemployment.

It’s being run by the Department for Work and Pensions, so your local Jobcentre will be able to run you through the specific criteria, and help you find out whether or not you’re eligible.
