We are looking for enthusiastic and committed individuals, who are looking to make a difference with a ‘can do’ approach. Working as part of a team is a rewarding part of the job, so helping out with loading duties is part of our team task and finish ethos.

This is a physical role that requires the movement of wheelie bins and handling sacks, so it will definitely keep you fit!

Whilst we are seeking applications for full time positions, we will also consider applications for part time working.

We offer on the job training and instruction on the various vehicles we operate in our fleet as well as our in cab technology, so your experience as a driver will be utilised and your skills and knowledge base will increase.

Whilst it would be advantageous if you hold a full Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC card with at least 2 years remaining on it) and a valid Digital Tachograph Card, this is not necessarily a barrier to you applying for this role. We can assist with helping you obtain a CPC and digital tachograph driver’s card if you do not already have one and training to retain this card will be ongoing and provided by Council with a relevant payment for undertaking the training.

You will be responsible for your vehicle including the cleanliness of the interior and exterior of the vehicle.

About the role

Reporting to the Supervisors / Managers, you will be required to start and finish at Oakwood House in Marsh Barton.

The role is an early start, predominately a 6.00am start.

The hours are on average, 37 hours per week, working 5 days out of 7 including catch up Saturdays after Bank Holidays and Christmas with the availability of further overtime.

As a waste operative class C LGV driver / loader you will have the responsibility for your own safety, crew safety and the safety of members of the public on a daily basis.

This is an all-weather role and full PPE will be supplied.

Training to retain the CPC card will be ongoing and provided by Exeter City Council with a relevant payment for undertaking the training. Other necessary training will be provided as part of our ongoing development in you.

Exeter City Council can offer you job security and some incredible employment benefits which include a generous contributory pension scheme, up to 29 days paid leave (service related), fully supported training opportunities to upskill yourself and provision of occupational health, wellbeing and employee assistance programs.

You will have access to refreshment facilities, showers / toilet facilities at the beginning, middle and end of the working shift

Parking on site is free but limited.

About the team

Waste, Recycling and Fleet is a busy service that reaches every household in the city. We also provide services to many businesses within the city too. Conducting over 67,000 collections a week, our professional drivers play a crucial role not only through their driving skills, navigating Exeter’s busy roads, but also being the key to ensuring that our loaders operate safely.

We have a team of staff who are proud to work for the City Council and put the residents of Exeter at the heart of everything we do.

To help with the Council’s commitments to move towards Net Zero by 2030 we are looking at innovative ways to achieve this in our teams

To add to our expanding fleet of electric vehicles we are updating our current fleet of diesel refuse collection vehicles to electric refuse collection vehicles which we now have 3.

As part of our continued commitment to reduce and recycle more waste streams from the doorstep we have introduced the collection of food waste to our service which we are currently rolling out in parts of the city and will continue to do so.
