Selling boats

We understand that sometimes private boat sales take place in the Canal. Owners must inform the Canal Office of their intention to sell.

Please note that the following conditions must be met:

  • The vessel must be in a seaworthy and safe condition and fit for navigation to remain in the Canal
  • A continuation of storage agreement must be agreed with the Exeter Canal Office (Exeter Port Authority)
  • A copy of satisfactory Bill of Sale must be produced to the Canal Office within 3 days – accepted examples are a RYA or a MCA Bill of Sale
  • The new owner must agree to the conditions stated in the boat storage agreement and sign a contract for the agreed period of storage and produce satisfactory insurance

A £25 admin fee is charged by Exeter Port Authority when a boat changes of ownership within the Canal.
