RYA Power Boat Training Courses
We offer RYA powerboat training courses from beginner through to advanced. Practical, enjoyable courses on the beautiful Exe Estuary and approaches using harbour patrol vessels.
We have two vessels that we use for RYA Powerboat courses and skippered vessel charter;
- The ‘City of Exeter’ is a 7.9m Cheetah Cat with four stroke twin 135hp Honda outboard Engines. Coded for Category 3 (Up to 20 miles from a safe haven). She is an excellent example of this well regarded and popular design
- Our Alaska 500 was built by Shetland. With a 70hp four stroke Yamaha engine this vessel provides positive handling and copes well with the choppy waters

Courses we offer
Powerboat level 2
Improve your powerboat driving and handling techniques over two days. If you’re new to powerboating, this practical course will prepare you with the safe driving and handling skills you need to complete short day trips in a powerboat.
Covering the theory and practical skills needed to become a competent powerboat driver, the course focuses on low speed close quarters handling, man overboard recovery, driving at planning speed and collision regulations.
Instructor to pupil ratio 1:3
Course Program: 2 days or sessions equalling 16 hours.

RYA level 2 - Powerboat handling direct assessment
A direct assessment is available for those who already have experience with powerboats.
The RYA Powerboat Level 2 Direct Assessment consists of a half day training (brushing up your existing skills) and half day assessment allowing a student to gain their RYA Powerboat Level 2 Certificate.

Advanced Power Boat
This course covers boat handling, seamanship, pilotage and navigation up to the standards required to drive a planning powerboat safely by day and night in tidal coastal waters with which the candidate is familiar. After completing the course you should be able to plan and execute coastal trips and return to a familiar port by night. Maximum two students per course.

RYA Powerboat Instructor Pre-Skills Assessment
A one day assessment and candidates must demonstrate a high level of powerboat driving competence. This is a pre-requisite for the RYA Powerboat Instructor Course. This is a compulsory assessment day to allow entry onto the RYA Powerboat Instructor course. During the day the students will need to demonstrate competence of powerboat driving to Instructor standards.
Pre-requisites
The following is required in order to attend the course:
- RYA Powerboat Level 2
- 1 season full time powerboat driving experience
- or 5 seasons part time powerboat experience

Power Boat Instructor
Become an RYA Powerboat Instructor over this three day course and be able to teach Level 1, Level 2 as part of a RYA Training Centre. A great way to share your passion for boating with others.

Vessel Charter
Our vessels can be chartered with a professional skipper for activities which help meet the Port Authority aims and objectives. This includes events, educational and environmental projects. Please get in touch if you would like further details.
