4. Exeter's Twinned Cities

Links with our twin cities are very active and exchanges have involved sports clubs, schools, business groups, health workers, architects, musicians, chess players, archers, and many individuals. Visits are organised by the Council, Exeter Twinning Circle and the Exeter-Yaroslavl Twinning Association.

Bad Homburg - Germany

Exeter has been twinned with Bad Homburg since 1965. The town lies outside of Frankfurt and is renowned for its castle, spa and casino. It gave its name to the Homburg hat and was a fashionable tourist destination for English visitors at the end of the nineteenth century.

Rennes - France

Rennes is the capital of Brittany and has a population of 200,000. It is an important centre for French telecommunications and has the country's largest Citröen factory, in addition to many historic buildings.

Links were first made between the universities of Exeter and Rennes in the early 1950s and the relationship has prospered since then, with the Exeter Twinning Circle maintaining strong links.

Terracina - Italy

Terracina became Exeter's partner in 1988 after having been linked with Bad Homburg for several years. It is a town of 70,000 and lies on the coast below Rome. Besides beautiful beaches it features several magnificent examples of Roman antiquity.

Yaroslavl - Russia

Yaroslavl lies 240 km north east of Moscow on the Rivers Volga and Kotorosl. The city, with a population of 650,000 has many important industries. It is of considerable historic interest, being part of the famous 'Golden Ring' and is a major cultural centre, with several museums, theatres and fine churches.

A formal twinning relationship was formed in 1989, following close links between the universities over many years. Exeter House is a centre to promote British business and cultural interests in Yaroslavl and Russia.
