Harbour Patrol

About the Harbour Patrol

The Harbour Master, Harbour Staff and a team of volunteers carry out regular patrols of the approaches and estuary at all times of the year, particularly in the busy summer months.

The purpose of the patrol is:

  • to enable the safe enjoyment and use of the approaches and the estuary by giving mariners practical assistance afloat, guidance on safety and good seamanship and advice on complying with the byelaws.
  • to provide guidance to visiting vessels to ensure that they can be safely accommodated whilst visiting the Exe Estuary and Exeter Canal.
  • to take action if the basic principles of safety and good seamanship are ignored or if there is a breach of the byelaws. eg: exceeding the speed limit.

Reporting of Incidents

The Harbour Master, Harbour Staff and a team of volunteers are unable to cover the harbour and estuary all the time and in order to maintain a safe environment it is important that incidents are reported so the necessary action can be taken.

This is essential information, which helps them manage the harbour and estuary more effectively to the benefit of all.

To report an incident please complete the incident report form at the link below or telephone or call-in and see the Harbour Master.
