Remembrance Day Service

Remembrance Sunday Service at City War Memorial Northernhay Gardens

Sunday 12 November 2023, 10.50 am

A Civic Party led by the Lord Mayor and comprising City Councillors, Honorary Aldermen, MP, representatives from the Fire Service, Army, Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Police, Sea Cadets and University and others, will lead a Service of Remembrance on Sunday 12 November 2023. The service is conducted at the City's War Memorial in Northernhay Gardens, everyone is welcome to attend.

The Lord Mayor's Chaplain will conduct the service which commences at 10.50 am, with the Exeter Salvation Army Band accompanied by the University of Exeter’s Chapel Choir will perform before the service as well as supporting the hymns. A large number of ex-service Units and other local associations are represented around the War Memorial carrying Standards and laying wreaths. Any associations which currently don't attend but would like to be represented at the service are asked to contact the Lord Mayor's office to register their interest so that an appropriate position can be allocated for them.

A Parade Marshall from the 6 RIFLES will provide military guidance with a Bugler playing Reveille and Last Post.

Civilians are welcome to lay poppies or wreaths. If they make themselves known to the Parade Commander then they will be shown where to stand.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the City War Memorial in Northernhay Gardens. To mark the occasion the memorial will be decorated in knitted poppies which were created in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, and previously displayed at Exeter Cathedral in 2017.
