3. Fire Safety for residents in flats

As well as Fire Safety measures we (as your landlord) have in place, there are things you can do to be fire safe, protect yourself, your neighbours and your possessions. These include:

  • Familiarise yourself with fire action notices in blocks and communal spaces. In the event of a fire, follow this advice or that of Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Services.
  • Test your fire door by opening the door halfway open and letting go. The door should close itself. If it doesn’t or if you notice any faults, please report any repairs to us on the number below. Faults may include; Missing letter box, holes in door, faulty door closures, doors not closing flush.
  • Do not wedge any fire doors open, even for a short amount of time.
  • Testing your Smoke Detectors on a weekly basis
  • Informing us if any Smoke Detectors do not work or are missing.
  • Report any faulty electrical installations to us.
  • Do not overload or overextend sockets.
  • Whitegoods such as washing machine, tumble driers and fridge freezers should not be placed or used anywhere outside of your home including any outside storage cupboards.
  • Always ensure that candles are secured in a stable holder and never leave them to burn on their own and make sure they are extinguished before going to bed or leaving the property.
  • Do not use BBQs, store flammable materials or excess amounts of combustible materials (i.e. card, timber, paper etc.) on balconies, communal spaces or next to blocks.
  • Never leave cooking unattended.
  • Do not dry clothes directly on portable heaters or open fires
  • Please ensure you put out cigarettes properly and never smoke in bed.
  • Do not store, keep, or temporarily place anything in communal areas. Or next to waste areas. Anything found in these areas, will be removed by the Council.
  • Always charge E-Bikes, E-Scooters and Mobility Scooters outside and away from the premises.
  • Do not keep your (or your visitor’s) E-Bikes, E-Scooters and Mobility Scooters in communal spaces or adjacent to the block.
  • Do not use or store bottled gas in the property.
  • Be aware of refracted light caused by mirrors and glass objects by windows or directly in sunlight.
  • Plan an escape route for you and your family to use in the event of a fire.
  • Report any concerns, suspicious activity or fire threats.
