Food waste collections
We are beginning to roll out food waste collections across Exeter
This will be done gradually, and the pace of the rollout will be determined by the availability of HGV drivers and new vehicles.
The next phase of the rollout commences 27 April 2023. Residents of the properties in this phase have been informed by letter and have received instructions and containers.
When will my street be getting food waste collections?
At the moment we cannot provide information on when the service will be rolled out into different areas of the city.
We are committed to introducing food waste collections across Exeter, but each new phase will require additional resources and we are introducing this service in the middle of a national shortfall in HGV drivers.
Protecting our ability to provide our core recycling and rubbish collection service without disruption is a priority under these circumstances. It is therefore necessary to introduce our food waste service gradually.
Please do not contact our small team by phone or by email with enquiries about when food waste collections will come to your street.
It is important that our staff can continue providing other support to residents in a timely manner.
However, if you have any questions then you can get in touch by using our Contact Us form.
Why are we introducing food waste collections?
Food waste is a major contributor to the climate crisis.
While we encourage everyone to reduce their food waste by only buying what they will consume, adding a food waste collection service will help the planet by turning wasted food into soil-improver while generating gas and electricity.
The service will also boost the city’s recycling rate. Currently, food collected in the black bin is burned at the Energy Recovery Facility in Marsh Barton.
