What can I put in my bins?

2. Black bin

Your black bin should be used for waste generated from daily living that cannot go in the recycling bin.See our comprehensive A-Z of recycling and waste if you are uncertain about which bin to use for a specific item.

A brief overview of how you should and should not use your black bin is given below.

Yes please:

  • nappies
  • incontinence pads
  • broken plate glass and drinking glasses (double wrapped for safety)
  • food, if you do not yet receive separate food waste collections and are not able to compost at home

No thanks (not considered part of daily living):         

  • small electrical items (kettles, toasters, mobile phones, etc.)
  • batteries (including products containing batteries)
  • DIY and building waste (plaster board, rubble, replaced fixtures and fittings, etc.)
  • garden waste
