What happens to my waste?

2. Food waste

We are currently rolling out food waste collections across the city.

Our crews collect the food waste in specialised vehicles and bring it back to our yard, where we store it in specialised containers. Staff from an anaerobic digestion plant in Devon then collect the food and transport it to their facility, where it is processed to generate electricity and soil improver.

Anaerobic digestion is not the same as composting, therefore compostable caddy liners don’t break down in it. This is why we suggest you don’t buy new bags and instead use old ones from other purchases.

Plastic liners, including compostable ones, are filtered out at the plant and sent to an Energy from Waste facility.
